A Look at the Global Food Crisis for World Hunger Day

by Maggie Glenski

As we reflect on this year’s World Hunger Day, we can’t help but recognize that our world is facing a global food crisis of unprecedented proportions. As many as 783 million people across the world don’t receive enough nutrition to lead an active, healthy life, or provide for themselves and their families. More than 333 million people face acute levels of food insecurity and don’t know where their next meal is coming from. This crisis is being greatly heightened due to conflicts, economic shocks, climate changes and increased fertilizer prices across the globe.

Children are being impacted in particular with approximately 45% of deaths among children under five years old being linked to undernutrition, meaning they aren’t getting enough nutrients to grow and thrive.

Other outcomes include wasting and stunting. In fact, 22% of children under the age of five - or nearly 1 in 4 - experienced stunted growth in 2020.

Food is one of the most basic human rights, and without it, our children are left with no hope or opportunity.

Almost half of all childhood deaths worldwide occur in children with malnutrition. And without the right nutrients, the brain cannot develop properly, resulting in long term effects on learning abilities in children.

We never want another mother to have to wonder how her children will get their next meal. This is why we partner with Rise Against Hunger and donate three meals to children in need with every item purchased on Hello Bluebyrd.

Rise Against Hunger is growing a movement to end global hunger by empowering communities, nourishing lives and responding to emergencies. They work with local leaders to harness the strengths of their communities and tackle their own food and nutrition security challenges.

In 2023, Rise Against Hunger packaged over 57 million meals, impacted over 3.6 million lives and distributed over 78 million meals worldwide.

Their mission is to target remote, last-mile communities within hunger pockets designated “serious” or higher on the Global Hunger Index, which are the hardest places to reach and are often difficult to access, lack communication and have poor infrastructure.

Their work starts with a meal. And every item purchased on Hello Bluebyrd donates three of them.
